Over the past few years in my excursions around the underground techno /rave /acid music scene in UK , I have came across many an interesting character , but none have struck me down with their sheer passion for pure undiluted rave techno than that of East London’s James Hollins AKA Jim Bones of the Crossbones /Phuture rave crew . I managed to persuade Jim to play on my new radio show called “The Spotlight” that i have recently started in an old police station in south London.
Having worked with him in the past at various events in London , i knew this would be tricky as he is very careful about where he puts himself in terms of his DJing and music production which he has no qualms about letting you know the fact of the matter.
So it was a small victory for me to nail a short interview even albeit for a brief half hour before we set off onto the radio studio. I Arranged to meet Jim in a nearby pub to Optical studio in New Cross South London , On his arrival he storms in like some mission bound secret agent from planet doom , dressed head to toe in black with black glasses perched on his forehead , with his hand held out clutching two freshly burned CD’s of his recent productions which he slams straight into my hands while pronouncing loudly with a wild eyed glare ” This is what i’m about ” , “This is where i’m taking it ,To a whole new level but staying with that original sound that is impossible to water down”.
This is the kind of handshake you get when meeting a core member of one of the UK’s darkest rave crews . – CROSSBONES SOUND SYSTEM . London’s legendary Doomcore commando’s who have danced many times over the years in face of the authority’s as documented in the video RAVE FRONTIERS
After a few minutes of our meeting , Jim candidly Fills me in with details of recent projects he is currently involved in as his eyes light up when we discuss the sound of the tracks of his i have already heard . “YOU SEE THAT’S WHATS MISSING” , he states , ” No cunt doe’s that anymore ” ; Jim goes into description , “We used to compare tracks at 5 am in the morning ,we’d be like , Oh that sounds like this – this sounds like that and Lets make a track that sounds like this, its all become to arty these days ” .
I nod agreeing and tell Jim ,this is exactly why i have sought him out , time and again including today, as he has a certain spark and enthusiasm for techno that i can relate to in many ways .
TEN TECHNO TUNES THAT HAVE STOOD THE TEST OF TIME :
Here are 10 “BLUEPRINTS” as Jim Bones would describe them .
1.) THE MOVER – WAVES OF LIFE ….
“Because it’s the one record that brings tears to people on a Sunday morning
2 .) INSIDER -TRYOUT T.O.001, …
“Because it’s as fucking mental as it gets”
3.)THE MOVER & RAVE CREATOR -ASTRAL DEMON
“Absolte spiritual/doom and still a stormer (it’s Lost & Rave The Planet)”
4.) ALL IN ONE – MY VISION (Mid Town )
“Take it back to 91, many of our mates have come clamouring for the name of that one”
5.) INCUBUS -THE SPIRIT ( Taken from the Volume 1 ep, on 80 Aum Records)
” A happy track without being cheesy, the real spirit of rave”
6.) SUBURBAN KNIGHT -THE ART OF STALKING
“If you don’t know or have this, saying you know techno is talking bullshit” !!
7.) SYSEX -WORLD DOMINATION 1992 (Plus 8 Records )
“Acid as fucked up as it gets. The track “Unreal Life” stands out here, almost impossible to mix but WHOA, they don’t do them like that anymore.”
8.) SUPER POWER -THE FUTURE CRUSADE
” Oliver Chesler and Miro Pajic. A step in a new direction that hasn’t been answered by anyone.”
9.)Lost 10-Apocalypse Never/Hell-E-Copter, the last word
10.)I.S.Q. 150-190 it goes above and beyond (Moby would not have made 1000 without it and it’s still not on the tube)
Q. > What projects are you currently involved in Jim
A.) I’m aiming to re-launch Rave Frontier Records. The project isn’t yet cast in stone but it’s looking good. I still have a couple of tracks to finish under the name “North London Knights” and will hopefully have releases from Dr Strange and Minimum Syndicat to follow. ( Check Jims release on the french Rave Techno outfit Minimum syndicat label under the name Kenny Kramp )
Q.) Will we be seeing the legendary crossbones rave crew sound system on the scene in the near future .
A. It’s hard to say, on the squat scene in London, highly unlikely. At clubs, small do’s, probably or we’ll die of boredom but the rig is really Lea’s department.
After the interview /meeting/ radio show with JIM BONES , i am left with an indelibly stamped memory of his eccentricity and energy that seems to set him apart from the usual old skool techno DJ’s that i am in contact with frequently .
And although this self proclaimed “LAB RAT” as Jim would describe his current existence in planet doom and ” having an ageing dog with multiple brain defects doesn’t help matters when it comes to going off for the weekend ” .
Im sure we wont be hearing the last of this man ,as his recent projects suggest aside from the others he is currently planning that all smell of hard rave techno such as his recent production under the moniker KENNY KRAMP.
Many thanks to Jim for taking the time to speak to me and also playing on the show was great having him in the studio !
